Questions for Your Contractor: A Series – What size company is right for my project?
In the residential construction world, you can hire all sizes of companies to work on your house. Knowing what size company is best for you can be a challenge. I’m here to lay out the advantages and disadvantages of each.
A small company of one or two employees will ensure the owner of the company is on site the majority of the time. Their name is on the line, so they are more likely to pay attention to detail. With the owner onsite, communication is a given. However, the downsides can be sizable. First off, the project may take longer than a big company. But the bigger issue lies with the owner, as delays could occur if they are sick, injured or on vacation.
A large company, with double digit employees, will ultimately get the job done faster. Unlike a smaller company, there can be a issues with communication, as you will not always have a direct line of communication with the boss.
Most likely, the person who you met with for the estimate will not be on site and could be difficult to get ahold of.
A medium size company can hold the benefits of both, creating a direct line of communication with the boss as well as swift, quality work. While a medium size company guarantees a more personal experience, they tend to book out quickly due to smaller crews.
While there are a multitude of factors that go into who you hire, company size should be taken into consideration when interviewing potential contractors.
