Questions for Your Contractor: A Series – Will the snow hurt my exterior paint job?
It’s official: snow has hit southeastern Wisconsin. Let’s chat about what we should all be doing to help maintain our homes this winter, specifically, how to sustain the outside painted surfaces.
The leading cause of paint failure is snow that sits on the surface for some time and eventually melts. This puts a lot of stress on the coating as it tries to protect the underlying surface. Ideally, you should manually remove the snow each time it falls. Be sure not to use salt, as this corrosive product will deteriorate the coating. While some coatings are more resilient, removing the snow is a great habit, especially if you want to avoid significant wood repairs.
Below is a list of specific areas to consider and recommended tools:
- Foundations: Shovel, broom or blower
- Siding near the ground: Shovel, broom or blower
- Posts: Shovel, broom or blower
- Door and window sills: Wipe off from inside if needed
- Dormers: Use a roof rake to pull snow away
- Decks: Shovel (ensure they do not have a metal edge), broom or blower
While none of us want to add to our list of shoveling areas, your pocketbook will thank you for it come springtime.
